Autumn arrives in Ireland

Meteorological autumn began on 1 September, and Ireland is already showing the early signs of seasonal change, such as cooler evenings, blustery winds, and the first spells of heavy rain. These are a marked contrast from the record-breaking summer of 2025, which saw multiple heatwaves and prolonged dry periods across Europe.

Met Éireann’s seasonal outlook (September–November) suggests above-average temperatures, with mixed rainfall patterns: wetter spells are more likely in the west and along coastal counties, while October may bring slightly drier interludes inland. For many, this will feel like a “classic Irish autumn”. Mild overall, but unpredictable and unsettled.

A traditional autumn with modern realities

Autumn in Ireland is typically mild but storm-prone, shaped by the Atlantic’s strong influence. In 2025, a more active jet stream and frequent low-pressure systems are expected to drive windy, wet conditions.

  • Leaf litter: As trees shed their leaves, paths, car parks, and walkways can quickly become slippery. Once broken down by rain, leaf litter forms a sludge-like layer that poses both safety and drainage risks. Clearing it promptly prevents slips, trips, and costly flooding.
  • Drainage pressures: Blocked gullies and drains are a common issue during unsettled spells. Regular clearance helps to reduce localised flooding, particularly in urban and high-footfall areas.
  • Tree safety: Strong autumn winds are often the first to reveal hidden weaknesses in trees. Dead, unstable, or diseased branches can fall suddenly, putting people and property at risk. Proactive tree safety inspections and timely interventions are the best defence.

The chance of the sunshine

Despite the unsettled outlook, there is still plenty of warmth in the autumn sun. When high pressure builds, Ireland may experience short spells of calmer, warmer weather. This can encourage a late flush of vegetation and weed growth, adding to site maintenance needs at a time when many expect growth to have slowed.

Forecast-informed operational readiness

With Met Éireann and partner agencies already releasing the 2025–26 storm names, beginning with Amy, Bram, and Chandra, the focus now shifts towards winter preparedness.

Ground Control is ready with a full suite of gritting and snow clearance services, tailored for Irish clients. From flexible “pay-per-visit” models to season-long protection packages, our services are designed to ensure resilience no matter what winter brings.
